Tales of my journey into the field of medical writing by CR.
I have always loved science and laboratory science in general. But a few years ago, in the beginning of the Pandemic, I found myself wanting to get out of the laboratory and into a career that was a little more flexible on my time and on my body! Standing on your feet for hours at a time in a laboratory was hard on my physicality, and I started to look around to see what other options there were for me.
What I could say about my education and training at the time was that I was highly trained and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist. Looking around, I happened upon a LinkedIn post regarding a Medical Writer training opportunity. I did not sign up for the class at The HIR Group without thought; I was deep into another Laboratory Scientist position. I asked some questions beforehand, but finally I was comfortable enough to take the class with some reassurance that I could learn how to be a medical writer. I was told that I would make around $45/hour, and that seemed like a dream to me because I was making just over $28/hour. The class was everything that I thought it would be and more. I felt as though the people at The HIR Group really did care about me, and “held my hand” throughout the process of becoming a medical writer.
Fast forward to now…my hourly rate is in the $50s/hour. I have a career steeped in science that is flexible and interesting. And…The HIR Group made good on their promise to support me in every way that they could on my transition into medical writing.
